What Are Essential Oils?
If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils provide plants with protection against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.
How Do I Use Essential Oils?
Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:
Certain essential oils, when diffused, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also cleanse and purify the air of unwanted odors.
Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically.
Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements for targeted wellness.
Essential oils are both exciting and promising when it comes to taking care of your own and your family’s health. Whether you’re applying essential oils topically, enjoying the aromatic benefits through diffusing, or taking essential oils internally, the positive effects of essential oils are boundless.
That’s why you’ll want to ensure that the essential oils you are using are capable of delivering on their promise. You’ll want to make sure that you are choosing essential oils for their potency and their purity.
At doTERRA we recommend using essential oils aromatically, topically, or internally depending on the properties in each individual oil. Nearly every oil and blend, with the exception of HD Clear® and Immortelle, can be diffused. Diffusing an oil helps us take advantage of its most noticeable characteristic—it’s scent. By learning more about how much of a role smell plays in our lives, the impact of essential oils can be understood on a deeper level.
The Power of Scent
Our sense of smell is one of our most powerful senses, and you have probably noticed in your own experience that some scents are more positively associated in our minds than others. Your body contains over 1,000 receptors for smell—more receptors than for any other sense. Dr. David K. Hill D.C., Founding Executive points out that even though our noses are not as acute as a bloodhound’s, “you can still detect thousands of varieties of odors in infinitesimal quantities.”
By putting essential oils directly into the air we breathe, we can influence the feeling of our environment, and, more powerfully, our own emotions. The doTERRA Emotional Aromatherapy® System contains six blends formulated to address specific emotions, but any oil can have this impact. We know that citrus oils, for example, are uplifting and energizing to your mood, while scents like Lavender or doTERRA Balance® are calming and grounding.
Other Uses and Benefits
While smell is a great tool, there are other reasons that diffusing essential oils can be beneficial to you:
Only a small amount of oil needs to be used if you’re using it in an ultrasonic diffuser. This means you can use one bottle of essential oil many times before you’ll need more.
How to Diffuse
The best way to diffuse is either nebulizing (cold air) or ultrasonic (water) diffusion. Heating oils to diffuse them can alter their delicate chemistry. Most of the diffusers doTERRA offers are ultrasonic diffusers, meaning that they use water to disperse the oil into the air.
To diffuse in an ultrasonic diffuser, put cool tap water to the fill line and add at least two drops or more to the water. Then, choose the time setting you desire and let it run. Diffusing in a nebulizing diffuser is waterless: take the cap and orifice off of your bottle of essential oil and attach it to the diffuser and choose your settings for time and amount at a time.
If you don’t have a diffuser, there are other ways to enjoy the benefits of diffusing. Try adding a few drops of essential oil to your palms and cup them over your nose while you inhale deeply. This is an easy technique especially when you’re on the go. Or, add some drops of oil to a glass spray-bottle with water and spritz around the room.
The combinations of essential oils you can diffuse are endless. And, like each of you, they are as unique as you would like them to be. Check out our post on creating blends to see what scents go well together, or follow us on Facebook, Pinterest, or Instagram for more ideas.
The dōTERRA ArōmaTouch Technique is a clinical approach to applying essential oils along energy meridians and visceral contact points of the back and feet to help balance sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of the body. Developed by Dr. David Hill, a leading expert in integrative medicine and therapeutic applications of essential oils, the ArōmaTouch Technique improves well-being by reducing physical and emotional stressors and by supporting healthy autonomic function. The technique is simple and intuitive and uses dōTERRA CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils for an unparalleled grounding experience.
Most individuals encounter factors in daily life, from both their internal and external environment, that have negative effects on their overall health and wellbeing.
These negative disturbances cause an imbalance in homeostasis, the natural balance of body systems and health. Even if this do not directly result in disease, cause our bodies to function at a sub-optimal level. The AromaTouch™ Technique works to restore homeostasis, and minimize the impact of these factors.
The four systemic constants that most often impair homeostasis are
Studies have revealed that over time high-stress levels can contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease, depression, insomnia, and ulcers. Stress also negatively impacts the immune system, leaving it increasingly vulnerable to pathogens. Stress causes the body to increase its production of serotonin, which in elevated levels can destroy white blood cells, resulting in a weakened immune system.
While many essential oils have been proven to counteract the negative effects of stress, both the essential oil blend Balance and the essential oil Lavender have specific calming effects on body systems.
The normal functioning of the immune system can be easily hampered by a number of toxins: environmental, dietary, medical interventions, etc. Exposure to a wide array of toxic insults including disease-causing pathogens, hormone or pesticide-contaminated food products, increasing levels of free-radical pollution, and overexposure to radiation all contribute to the weakening of the immune system.
The increased consumption of foods with pro-inflammatory components (foods high in polyunsaturated vegetable oils and trans-fats) together with high carbohydrate and low protein consumption contribute to increased inflammation in body tissues. Stress with its accompanying imbalance of cortisol can also contribute to chronic uncontrolled inflammation and various immunological dysfunctions. Studies increasingly show a direct link between chronic illness, inflammation, and fatal disease.
An imbalance of the autonomic nervous system (the opposite of homeostasis), can negatively impact our health in a number of ways. There is evidence that autonomic imbalance can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular morbidity and even mortality. Autonomic imbalances can result from a number of sources, the major ones are mentioned above: stress, decreased immunity, and inflammation. Restoring homeostasis, or autonomic balance, can reduce the physiological impact of stressors on the body.

Hopefully you’ve gotten your hands on a bottle of doTERRA’s newly offered Copaiba oil (pronounced Co-pie-EE-ba). It’s a tremendously powerful oil both for mind and body. It can calm you when you feel anxious, boost your immune system and help with digestive and respiratory issues. It’s very effective at calming the nervous system which is why many people purchase it. The stories we have pouring in from our team about how Copaiba is helping them are incredible! And now let’s chat about how to use Copaiba.
Why use Copaiba?
Copaiba essential oil is made from the resin of the copaiba tree which can grow to be over 100 feet in tropical South America. Copaiba oil is widely used in beauty products including soaps, creams, lotions, and perfumes. The natives of north and northeastern Brazil have been using Copaiba since the 16th century.
Copaiba supports the health of your cardiovascular, immune, digestive and respiratory systems. It is a powerful antioxidant that helps calm, soothe, and support the nervous system. Copaiba promotes clear, smooth skin and reduces the appearance of blemishes.
Because of Copaiba’s chemical makeup its effects on the body are similar to CBD oil. It does not contain psychoactive cannabinoids like marijuana-derived products can, but the main component, caryophyllene, may be neuro-protective and have cardiovascular and immune benefits. This is exciting! You can read more about CBD vs Copaiba by clicking here.
Similar to Frankincense, Copaiba supports a healthy inflammatory response and so these two oils are even more powerful used together.
You can use DoTERRA’s Copaiba topically, aromatically and internally.
How to use Copaiba topically:
Dilute one to two drops with a carrier oil , then apply to desired area. Rub in well. Repeat as needed. This is a life saver for the neck pain I get sometimes from sleeping wrong or working at the computer too long. It feels better in minutes!
I recommend doTRRA’s fractionated coconut oil as a carrier for topical use and roller bottles. It is non-greasy and doesn’t stain.
Apply topically combined with a carrier oil or a facial moisturizer to help keep skin clean and clear, and to help reduce the appearance of blemishes. I recommend doTERRA’s Hydrating Cream, it is my absolute favorite!
How to use Copaiba internally:
Drop 1-2 drops under the tongue in the morning and evening. Hold under your tongue 20 seconds then follow with water
Add 1 to 2 drops to water, juice, or tea daily or as needed
Add 1-2 drops to an empty veggie capsule. You can also add a carrier oil like coconut, olive or avocado oil to the capsule (optional – makes it gentler on your stomach).
Take internally to help soothe and calm the nervous system.

Both are gentler oils that can assist in feelings of clear breathing.)

A few drops of Slim & Sassy in a glass of cold water can help you manage cravings and ease discomfort.*
Which oils help you get through the hardest parts of winter? Let us know in the comments!
When it comes to physical fitness, winter is the season of excuses. It’s too cold to exercise outside. Who’s going to watch my kids so I can go to the gym? I don’t have the room, equipment, or time to work out at home. Fitness isn’t seasonal, it’s a lifestyle and your waistline doesn’t go into hibernation because the weather outside is frightful. This year, don’t let that winter coat expand with empty promises that you’ll resume exercising on January 1; use the cold weather as inspiration to change up your routine and get your entire family involved.
Become a lifestyle Role Model
As a parent, one of your most important responsibilities is as a lifestyle role model to your children. Studies show that physical activity habits are developed very early in life, with the primary factor being the habits modeled by their parents (Hinkley et al.). Parents who exercise on a regular basis raise children who are more likely to have an active lifestyle, have a healthy weight status, are sick less, and even perform better in school (Jago et al.). Exercising with your children instills in them the idea that physical activity is an integral part of daily life and that a sedentary lifestyle is not normal. The doldrums of winter are the perfect opportunity to be creative, have fun, bond, and model to your children how important daily exercise is.
Exercising At Home
Exercising indoors doesn’t require a room full of expensive equipment or a lot of time. Most importantly, it can be effective. When developing any exercise program, there are a few fundamentals to keep in mind. According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the first principle of effective exercise is overload—an effective exercise program must impose demands on the human movement system that force the body to adapt (National Academy of Sports Medicine). Unless you push your body harder or in a different manner than it ever has before, it has no reason to progress. This overload can be achieved through an unfamiliar movement (a new exercise), increased volume (more exercise), or increased resistance (a load, such as your child). Lastly, all exercises are variations of pushing, pulling, squatting, or core stability; once you understand the basic movements, the variations are only limited by your imagination.
Involving Your Children
An easy way to get the heart pumping, your muscles burning, and your children involved in a fun exercise routine is through a simple peripheral heart action circuit. Peripheral heart action uses several basic compound movements (exercises that engage two or more joints to stimulate multiple muscles) in an alternating circuit for a fast, effective, and functional full-body workout. With knowledge of the four basic movements, you can get a great full-body, indoor workout, with little or no equipment, that is simple enough to teach a toddler, but that you can do with an infant strapped to your chest as added resistance. Even better, as your child grows, their increased weight can be the overloading resistance factor that your body needs to continue to progress.
Physical fitness doesn’t halt when the weather gets cold and resume with another New Year’s resolution. Use the cold weather as an opportunity to bring your workout routine into the home, where you can try something new, get re-energized about exercise, and involve your children.

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells, essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and their beautiful fragrance, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.
But what exactly is a volatile aromatic compound? In short, these compounds are small organic molecules that tend to change quickly from their solid or liquid state to a gas at room temperature. They are called volatile because they change state quickly. When you first open a bottle of essential oil, you instantly notice that the aroma is potent and you can smell it typically even from some distance. The physical and chemical properties of the volatile aromatic compounds that compose essential oils allow them to quickly move through the air and directly interact with the olfactory sensors in the nose. Such unique properties make essential oils ideal for applications inclusion in aromatherapy – using these compounds from plants to help maintain a healthy mind and body – as well as other applications. The type of volatile aromatic compounds present in an essential oil determines both the oil’s aroma and the benefits it offers.
Over 3,000 varieties of volatile aromatic compounds have been identified to date. The nature of an essential oil varies from plant to plant, within botanical families, and from species to species. The delicate ratio of aromatic constituents found in any given essential oil are what make it unique and give it specific benefits.
Even with pure essential oils the composition of the oil can vary depending on the time of day, season, geographic location, method and duration of distillation, year grown, and the weather, making every step of the production process a critical determinant of the overall quality of the essential oil product.
Essential oils can be used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used as single essential oils or in complex essential oil blends depending on user experience and desired benefit. Want to learn how to use essential oils? Empaths walk around every day picking up on the emotions of others. If you’re an empath, this can be quite overwhelming and begin to affect other areas of your life, draining you of energy and otherwise impeding on your overall functioning.
Developed empaths can sometimes turn their empathic receptors on and off in various situations to better regulate how much emotional energy they take in at any given time. However, even the most developed empathwill need to learn grounding techniques so that they don’t get overwhelmed.
What is Grounding, you ask? Essentially, it’s the act of connecting your body with the earth, and there is science to support it’s effectiveness. When most people think of grounding they think of walking barefoot on the ground in nature. However, walking barefoot through a field is not the only way to ground yourself. Connecting yourself with earth energy can be done in a variety of ways. Most of these methods can be done whether you have access to the outdoors or not.
Here are 6 Effective Ways to Ground Yourself:
1. Oils and Incense
The use of plant oils, incense, and other aromatics for grounding dates back to ancient civilizations. Native Americans still use natural fragrances and herbs like sage, sweetgrass, juniper, cedar and pine needles to cleanse an area of negative energy and to attract positive energy. Sage especially is made into bundles called smudge sticks, which give off an incense-like smoke which is said to clear the air of negative energy.
As long as it’s 100% naturally derived, any oil or incense can provide grounding. Essential oils are great when you’re on the go. Natural incense and resins are great for burning in any room of your house.
Water can be used in any number of ways to help you stay grounded. The options are endless. If you’re in need of a quick grounding (and relaxation) session, take a bath or a shower and just focus on how the water feels on your body. Feeling childlike? Dance in the rain or go stomp in some puddles. Live near a body of water? Go for a swim or just sit near the water and reflect upon your thoughts.
Water can also be used as an element in home decor features. Try setting up a miniature water fountain near your work space for continuous grounding throughout your day.
3. Meditation and Reflection
Whether it’s in nature or in the comfort of your own home, taking time to gather, organize, and clear your thoughts is important. It’s doubly important for empaths because of the amount of unfiltered, raw emotion you can sometimes take in. All of that emotion can feel confusing and jumbled with the rest of your thoughts. It’s also easy to get your emotions mixed up with those of others, so taking time to filter out what’s yours to own and what’s not is an important practice.
If you’re feeling emotionally stressed, try taking some time out of your day and asking yourself the following questions:
How am I feeling?
What is going on in my life right now that may be causing me to feel negatively?
Have I been around any negative people or situations recently?
How are these feelings serving me?
What feelings can I let go of and which ones are mine to own?
Write down your thoughts if you need to.
4. Gems and Stones
Gemstones and crystals are great for grounding because they come directly from the earth. They are also extremely portable. Some empaths carry a small pouch in their purse or bag with their favorite gemstones. Others wear them as jewelry. However you choose to use gemstones and crystals in your grounding techniques, make sure that they are 100% natural.
One simple way to ground yourself with gemstones is to hold them in your hand. Try rubbing the stones during times of stress or using them during your meditation or reflection time.
Of course, if you have the time and a favorite spot in mind, getting out into nature is one of the best ways to ground yourself. Preferably it will be a quiet location by yourself. It sounds weird at first, but you can use nature as a sounding board for your thoughts. If nobody is around to hear, you can say whatever you need to say out loud.
Try your best to experience the nature surrounding you with all of your senses. See, hear, taste, smell, and feel it. If you’ve never spent that much time communing with nature, I think you’re in for a treat.
Depending on the time of year and your location, don’t forget to grab some natural bugspray and sunscreen, dress for the weather, and take into account any seasonal allergies you have. Although nature is great, it can still be a little harsh to humans at times.
6. Going Barefoot
It’s the most basic grounding practice there is, and it’s simple. Take off your shoes and feel the earth. Whether it’s your backyard or the beach, feeling the earth beneath your feet has been found to have numerous benefits for your health. It’s especially helpful if you’re an empath, as it can help rebalance your emotional state.
